For details on how to apply, please read our Requirements. We receive close to 1000 applications annually for twelve seats in our program. Our current acceptance rate is less than one-half of 1% in fiction, and between 2% and 3% for the other genres.

We only accept full-time, in-residence candidates for our three-year program. There is no low-residency or part-time option.

Starting with applications for Fall 2020, the Michener Center will no longer require GRE scores.

December 1st is the submission deadline, no exceptions. NOTE: Electronic submission does not mean instantaneous submission. After completing the general application and paying the fee, it can take 72 hours or longer to receive an email verification from the Graduate and International Admissions Center (GIAC) with the necessary links to upload your documents. Only after submission of the general application and fee are your recommenders contacted with instructions on how to upload their letters. Please allow time for this process.

NOTE: The Michener Center for Writers is not accepting applications in the primary fields of playwriting or screenwriting for the 2021-22 academic year. We encourage playwrights to apply to the extraordinary MFA program in UT’s Department of Theatre and Dance, and we encourage screenwriters to apply to the outstanding MFA program in UT’s Department of Radio, Television, and Film. We do still welcome applications with declared secondary fields in playwriting or screenwriting.
