We receive close to 1000 applications annually for twelve seats in our program. Our current acceptance rate is less than one-half of 1% in fiction, and between 2% and 3% for the other genres.
We only accept full-time, in-residence candidates for our three-year program. There is no low-residency or part-time option.
DECEMBER 15 is the submission deadline, no exceptions. Electronic submission does not mean instantaneous submission: after completing the general application and paying the fee, it can take up to 72 hours or longer to receive an email verification from Graduate and International Admissions Center (GIAC) with the necessary links to upload your documents. Only after submission of the general application + fee are your referees contacted with instructions on how to upload their letters. Allow time for this.
Those who hold an MFA or PhD degree in creative writing, in any genre from any institution, or an MA in creative writing from UT Austin are not eligible for our MFA program. Those with MAs in creative writing from other institutions are considered on an ad hoc basis.
